Season Review: 2016/17 Ligue 1

2016/17 Ligue 1 was relatively shocking season personally as Monaco had secure the title after 37 matches, their first league title since 1999/2000 season. Before the season began, I was expecting Paris Saint-Germain the defending champions to win the league title as they had successfully managed to do it four previous seasons. The reason that PSG failed to lift the league title this season because it could be they hasn’t found the right formula yet since Zlatan Ibrahimovic moved to Manchester United. Without further due, I would like give an official review on 2016/17 Ligue 1.

As mention, I was a bit shocking to see that Monaco had become this season Ligue 1 winner and it would be their first title since 1999/00 season. I could say that it was a tough season ahead for Monaco and PSG as Monaco had to maintain their position at the top of the table whereas PSG were trying to win the league this season as they are the defending champion.

Comparing over the past five seasons, this season was much better in terms of competitiveness of the league because PSG has been dominating the Ligue 1 on four previous season. At least fans are more excited to watch this season as Monaco, PSG and Nice are the title contender.

For me personally, the shocking moment is to see Radamel Falcao and Mario Balotelli to re-defined their career as both striker had reform their performance as they were used to be as both players has managed to score 21 and 15 respectively. I have to praised Leonardo Jardim & Lucien Favre on helping both players to re-shape their career by becoming who they used to be. It was a shocking as Lyon did not perform well this season as they were runner up last season and I could believe is because of the competitiveness. This season’s top scorer, it wasn’t a surprised to see Edison Cavani becoming the top scorer as he scored 35 goals this season.

Before ending this review, chosing Ligue 1 Team of the Year is a must for me when doing a football season review. The formation that I will be for the team will be 4-3-3. Following would be the my Ligue 1 Team of the Year:

GK: Danijel Subašić – AS Monaco (France) – Croatia
LB: Benjamin Mendy – AS Monaco (France) – France
CB: Kamil Glik – AS Monaco (France) – Poland
CB: Thiago Silva – Paris St-Germain (France) – Brazil
RB: Ricardo Pereira – OGC Nice (France) – Portugal
LM: Thomas Lemar – AS Monaco (France) – France
CM: Marco Verratti – Paris St-Germain (France) – Italy
RM: Bernardo Silva – AS Monaco (France) – Portugal
ST: Falcao – AS Monaco (France) – Colombia
ST: Alexandre Lacazette – Olympique Lyonnais (France) – France
ST: Edinson Cavani – Paris St-Germain (France) – Uruguay

That is all I have to review about Ligue 1. Hopefully that next season would be as competitive as this season to ensure that Ligue 1 can be better and more people would watch the league.
